Methamphetamine, commonly known as "Meth", is a potent and addictive stimulant which directly affects the central nervous system. Also known as "speed", "crank", "glass", or "ice", Meth is a completely synthetic drug made from ephedrine or pseudoephedrine and "cooked" from an assortment of chemicals in locations from rental homes to rental trucks, motel rooms to sub divisions. While the use of Meth itself is inherently toxic, the actual waste from "cooking" the meth is as dangerous if not more so than the drug itself. Each pound of meth produced leaves behind five or six pounds of toxic waste. Meth cooks often pour leftover chemicals and byproduct sludge down drains in nearby plumbing, storm drains, or directly onto the ground. Chlorinated solvents and other toxic byproducts used to make meth pose long-term hazards because they can persist in soil and groundwater for years. Clean-up costs are exorbitant because solvent contaminated soil usually must be incinerated.
Why Test? In Colorado alone, the number of meth lab seizures reported by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation has increased threefold in the past three years, up to 450 a year.
While certain levels of Meth waste are entirely detectable, smaller, yet still heavily dangerous, levels of toxic waste from the cooking of Meth may still be lingering in a potential home or commercial site long after the meth byproducts are removed. Black Bear Inspections uses the latest air monitoring practices and colormetric wipe sampling to determine the actual amount of toxicity in the air and hard surfaces in a property to adequately identify the potential risk for your family or business. Through sampling we can ensure the safety of the residents or workers in former meth lab locations.
